Summer Summary

Summer 2021 Weather in High Heaton

What sort of summer have we had weather-wise? Meteorologically, summer in the UK consists of the months of June July and August, so we can now look at the summer overall in High Heaton and also see how it compares to those in recent years.

The summer began promisingly. June was warm and very dry, July was also warm and had average rainfall, but August, while dry, was cool and cloudy, and the last three weeks of the summer were particularly disappointing.

Here are some of the statistics:

The average temperature was 15.7°C which is 0.5°C warmer than the 30 year average, making it the 8th warmest in that time. However there were no real heatwaves and the temperature reached 25°C on only two days, July 16th and 17th. The maximum temperature of the summer was 27.9°C on Saturday 17th July and the minimum temperature was 6.3°C on Tuesday June 22nd.

The total rainfall was 123mm which is only 65% of the average. There have been only four drier summers in the last 30 years (1995, 1996, 2006 & 2018). Only 13 of the 92 days had more than 2mm of rain and the wettest day was Tuesday July 6th when 19mm fell.

So the answer to the question posed at the beginning is that summer 2021 in High Heaton began well but ended disappointingly, and overall, despite being very dry, it was not a particularly memorable summer, but neither was it a poor one.
